“The Shallow Ford” was an important crossing for travelers, traders and soldiers in the  18th and 19th century. This park is named in remembrance of the crossing and the travelers who used it. The Mountains to the Sea trail follows part of the Shallow Ford Loop Trail, the Homestead Trail and the Basin Creek Trail.

Interested in walking the trails? The park is on 197 acres at 1955 Gerringer Mill Road, Elon. It’s operated by the Alamance County Recreation and Parks Department at 336-229-2410, http://www.alamance-nc.com. There is parking, trail maps and a rest room. The trails are easy/moderate and there is paddle access to the Haw. Keep your eyes open for native flowers as well as daffodils, still flowering at an old homestead.

    1. Thank you! Many of the trails in Alamance county are fairly new- and are part of the new “Mountains to the Sea” trail which will connect trails from the mountains at Murphy ( North Carolina ) down through Alamance county and then down to the coast.
